Dear Residents,
As winter sets in, I hope you are all keeping warm and cosy.
I am thrilled to share some exciting news…. after two and a half years, the Auckland City Council has granted the resource consent for our new Independent Living project, located opposite the Terraces. While the project is yet to be named, we are eager to hear your suggestions! Please submit your ideas to the concierge desk.
Earthworks will commence on October 1st, and we anticipate the project will take approximately 29 months to complete, with an expected completion date of March 2026. Over the coming months, residents will have the opportunity to enjoy a sneak preview of the designs. This new development promises to enhance the Village and bring even more vibrancy to our community. Additionally, to add a bit of sparkle to these winter months, we are looking forward to our Mid-Winter Dinner on Thursday 25th July. It’s sure to be a fun-filled evening, so don your denim and diamonds if you have them!

Updates from the Terraces Restaurant
Dear Residents,
For those of you who enjoy a nice cold glass of beer, you will have noticed that the Asahi tap beer has been removed. The main reason behind this is that the company supplying us, prefer bigger accounts than ours and it was not proving cost effective for them with the volume we were selling.
So, with this in mind, we have now switched over the Heineken Silver, which is taking the market by storm, and is also a low-carb beer solution. The nice thing about this is that I can now order it one keg at a time through Gilmour’s, who deliver to us pretty much daily.
As many residents are aware, I am more of a wine drinker, however, this is a lovely tasting, cold drop of beer – of course I had to try it first. Nurses' Corner: Respite Care or Short Term Care
Respite care provides an essential break for care providers or spouses, allowing them to take a holiday or simply rest. Typically, respite care involves a short-term stay of about 1-2 weeks. It is also available for individuals needing care after hospital treatment before they return to their communities or the Retirement Village.
Admission Process:
- Medical Information Collection: Before admission, our staff will contact your GP to gather important information, including medical history, medications, resuscitation status, and recent blood test results. This process usually takes a minimum of two days.
- Personal Care Information: Village Nurses will either collect personal care information or receive it from the spouse, care provider, or family. This crucial information will be handed over to the Main Care Centre Nurses.
Planning and Arrangement:
- Advance Preparation: It is essential to plan and arrange Respite Care ahead of time to ensure a smooth transition.
- Adjustment Period: Expect at least three days for the resident to settle in and adjust to the new surroundings, and for staff to become familiar with the resident. While the change of environment can be challenging, our staff is dedicated to providing comfort and reassurance during this period.
Recommended Admission Timing:
- Weekday Admissions: To meet comprehensive admission requirements and ensure all necessary information is available, we recommend that admissions do not take place on Fridays or weekends. This minimises risks associated with incomplete knowledge of the resident’s clinical or personal information.
Our goal is to make the transition to respite care as smooth and comfortable as possible for both residents and their families. If you have any questions or need further assistance, please do not hesitate to contact us.
Who Are the People in Our Neighborhood?
Residents share a small insight into their fascinating lives.
John and Jenny Collins
John and Jenny met when they were both working in the same hospital in Manchester. After they were married and John completed his surgical training, they moved to Auckland. Jenny worked as a medical secretary at the Princess Mary Hospital, later called the Starship, and John at Middlemore and Auckland University. They have one son who lives in Glendowie with his wife and two boys.
Congratulations to John as recently he was awarded the NZ Order of Merit for services to surgical education and breast cancer management.
Phil and Carole Olsen
We will have been married for 54 years next month, having lived in Auckland all our lives. Philip graduated from Auckland University with a degree in Mechanical Engineering and Carole worked in Telecommunications. We have also owned and run a motel together while our two sons were teenagers, a fun though busy experience! We love travelling and have been trying to travel as much as we can before we are unable to. We would just like to thank everyone for the lovely hospitality and atmosphere here. An example is when Carole departed on a month-long trip around Europe and Philip went to visit our oldest son in Australia, our senior cat Lochie escaped from the balcony and was missing for a week. Our catsitter Robyn was shown so much support from everyone in the village. Luckily Lochie was found in a backyard. We moved into St Andrew’s in October 2023 from Epsom and are so happy to have made this choice.
Di and Joe Hall
Di was born in Hamilton, and educated at Blackpool School Waiheke Island & Hamilton Girls High. After school, lived in Devonport, and worked at Farmers Trading & Edward Lumley & Sons. Played basketball at YWCA, and crewed on a support vessel for 1956 Auckland to Suva Yacht Race. Married Joe in 1957. During 67 years & 4 children, events included teaching music at Sacred Heart College, completing Trinity College of Music Grade 8 piano & a successful career in Eastern Suburbs real estate, where my first mentors were John & Jill Cran. Joseph was born in Auckland and lived most of his life in St Heliers. Educated at St Ignatius Convent & Sacred Heart College. Member of the 1st XV rowing 8 & University 8 while at Law School, Auckland University. 1953 gallantly defended NZ in CMT in RNZ Engineers with Sapper Des Mataga. Practised law for 55 years. Completed 38 marathons with the YMCA Club. We now have 9 grandchildren, 6 great-grandsons and 1 great grand-daughter. Resident in St Andrew’s for 15 months and enjoyed it since day one.
Robyn Marshall
I was born in Auckland and after the war at the age of 18 months went with my parents to live at Onetangi Beach on Waiheke Island. It was an idyllic childhood even though electricity didn’t arrive until 1954. We returned to Auckland and I trained as a primary school teacher. I met my late husband John, married and have lived in St Heliers ever since. We had 3 children. My final career move was to run the Student Centre at the Tamaki Campus of the UoA. My hobbies are reading, uncoordinated dancing and classical music
Market Day at The Terraces
We organized our market day inside The Terraces Restaurant on June 8th, marking the beginning of what we hope will become a cherished tradition. The support from both residents and visitors was phenomenal, and the fundraising efforts by the school kids added to the vibrant atmosphere. We’re excited to share snapshots capturing the essence of this inaugural event with you.

You’ll find her stationed at the entrance of the Terraces Restaurant every Thursday from 12-1 pm, ready to enchant you weekly with her exquisite stock flowers, dahlias, tulips and roses. St Andrew's Village is celebrating a remarkable achievement after securing three prestigious awards at the recent 12th Asia Pacific Eldercare Innovation Awards. This international recognition solidifies their position as a leader in innovative and high-quality senior care.
The Ageing Asia Eldercare Innovation Awards, often referred to as the "Oscars" of Aged Care, is a highly respected competition. Finalists present their work to a distinguished panel of judges, making St Andrew's Village's triple win all the more impressive. A Commitment to Resident Wellbeing, St Andrew's Village was awarded Operator of the Year – Residential Aged Care and Facility of the Year - Residential Aged Care. These accolades highlight their dedication to resident well-being. In the history of the awards, this is the first time a single site has achieved both distinctions.
Andrew Joyce, CEO of St Andrew's Village, attributes this success to the village's people. "The awards are a reflection of the people that work within St Andrew's," he says. "They also reflect the commitment from the entire team to keep refreshing the site, to continually provide exceptional services in exceptional surroundings, and to enable families to stay connected." St Andrew's Village also secured the Facility of the Year – Ageing-In-Place award. This recognises their innovative approach to supporting seniors who wish to live independently in their own homes.
The judging panel was particularly impressed by the village's focus on "looking after the whole resident," emphasising social, cognitive, cultural, and spiritual well-being alongside physical needs. The ongoing regeneration efforts within the village, including green buildings and welcoming communal spaces, further contribute to a supportive environment for residents.
